Even though she’s cleared to launch the 1,400hp Hoonicorn she can’t drive herself to school! Charles Tanner may only be in his mid-twenties but he has been casting white metal bearings for over 10 years already. White metal bearings are found in engines from the early 1900s all the way up to the 1960s. The white metal coating is a soft malleable material that can withstand high temperatures and is designed specifically to protect the crankshaft. In this episode of Handcrafted, Charles removes the damaged white metal coating from the bearings of a Singer Nine from the 1930s and applies a fresh coating. You would never guess that inside Ged’s garden shed he’s restoring wood trim and veneer for some of the most iconic classic British cars. Ged and his son Daniel have re-veneered Sir William Lyon’s Jaguar XJ6 and even worked on cars for members of the royal family. There are only four or five people that do this type of specialist work in the UK and few people know how involved the process can be. Our ’85 Buick Regal - Project Street Regal - gets rebuilt from the inside out! Under the hood a new drivetrain and chassis are installed. We add some GNX body panels before cleaning up and updating a set of old Camaro/Nova wheels with fresh paint and trim pieces. Then, the Buick gets its dated vinyl top removed and a new spoiler to help keep the rear end on the ground. Inside, Project Street Regal gets some upgrades to its dated interior including sound proofing along with attention to all of the mechanical and electrical systems. With a nod to the Grand National, we’re giving our Regal more Go-Go. We fabricate a race inspired fuel system. Then, the Buick is finally ready for some fit and finish with body work and candy paint.
