White metal bearings are found in engines from the early 1900s all the way up to the 1960s. The white metal coating is a soft malleable material that can withstand high temperatures and is designed specifically to protect the crankshaft. In this episode of Handcrafted, Charles removes the damaged white metal coating from the bearings of a Singer Nine from the 1930s and applies a fresh coating.
