Vintage sports car specialist James MacMath has a particular passion for Marcos Engineering, a low-volume British car manufacturer founded in the late 50s. They started out building race cars for 750 Motor Club events, claiming victories in the capable hands of Jackie Stewart, Derek Bell, and Jackie Oliver to name a few. Charles Tanner may only be in his mid-twenties but he has been casting white metal bearings for over 10 years already. White metal bearings are found in engines from the early 1900s all the way up to the 1960s. The white metal coating is a soft malleable material that can withstand high temperatures and is designed specifically to protect the crankshaft. In this episode of Handcrafted, Charles removes the damaged white metal coating from the bearings of a Singer Nine from the 1930s and applies a fresh coating. You would never guess that inside Ged’s garden shed he’s restoring wood trim and veneer for some of the most iconic classic British cars. Ged and his son Daniel have re-veneered Sir William Lyon’s Jaguar XJ6 and even worked on cars for members of the royal family. There are only four or five people that do this type of specialist work in the UK and few people know how involved the process can be. In this instalment of Handcrafted, Ged and Daniel are restoring a clock binnacle from a Jaguar Mk2. Watch as they transform this aging wood component to its former glory.
