This 3-part troubleshooting process can be a big help for golfers struggling to get rid of a slice.

Step 1: Players who fight this pattern will typically have an excessively open club face and/or weak grip. This will make it harder to compress the ball, but it can also discourage a strong, body-driven pivot. As we know tour pros close the face roughly ~30º from address to impact (on average), defining “square” and becoming comfortable with a few club face closing strategies is often a great start.

Step 2: With a new sense for "square", we will want to neutralize club path. Golfers who play with an open face will typically rely on a noticeable “out-to-in" path; this can make matters worse, but it is an understandable attempt to get the ball started down the target line. However, since we have squared the face in Step 1, we must now rework the path to avoid a left miss and hopefully, create some soft draws/fades.

Step 3: Golfers who slice the ball will often rely on an upper-body/arm dominant transition; this makes it harder to shallow the club and produce a path that is compatible with a “square” face (as defined above). Ultimately, we want our lower body and larger muscles to lead the downswing, so that we can create power/consistency as the arms take on a more passive role. This final rhythm & tempo component is often the last piece to tie everything together.
