The new pavement delivered as promised with growing kart classes and drivers returning with Snake River Karters, some racers registering new karts after more than 10 years of inaction. With the inaugural laps made on Saturday and ribbon cutting ceremonies on Sunday the newly laid pavement produced large kart counts! Long standing track records fell to very fast times in most of the classes. The weekend for me as a father was fantastic! My daughter Kelsey, 6 years old, participated in her first race with the Kid Kart class. A class in which karts are very affordable, they are equipped with a small CC engine and top out at 25 to 30 mph. She had a great time without incident. My weekend started with a full day of Saturday practice on the new asphalt. Although the configuration is basically the same, the track surface is smoother, faster and drives different with the updates. I will have a new video posted on my YouTube channel shortly. Eighteen 125 Shifter karts registered for the event. It is very possible to have 20 or more for the next event in July, which is typically our largest event of the season in the Shifter class. Practice went well and I was improving the chassis every session. I installed a new set of MG yellow tires for qualifying which was separated into two sessions due to the amount of karts. I qualified 3rd feeling like I needed to make minor chassis adjustments. The heat races were also split into A and B heats. The heat race was beyond exciting for me; my right front tire went completely flat during the first laps of the race! The tire may have been deflating during qualifying as well. I have never had a tire go down during a race so now I know what that feels like. I managed to finish 6th out of 9 karts in the heat. I could no-longer squeeze my left hand tight for the rest of the day, I had complete muscle failure from holding the steering wheel to keep the kart straight with the flat tire. I replaced the front right hand tire and wheel for the 16 kart main event. I started 5th on the inside of the 3rd row. What a feeling that was with 16 karts ready to race to the checkered in a 20 lap shootout! In the first laps I gave 2nd and 3rd a run, they were beating and banging in front of me. In the end my arm and hand muscles couldn't withstand racing for a podium finish and I crossed the line in 4th. A great day considering, and the kart is in one piece to race another day.
