At most resorts the longest rail you can find is around 30ft, and that extra 10ft makes a noticeable difference. Going for tricks on longer features is a good way to show yourself that you have that particular trick on lock, it is much harder to balance a trick to the end of such a long feature. It can also be a bit intimidating to step up to larger features, so in this video I thought I would share some of the things I was thinking about while trying tricks on the 40ft down rail. I hope this helps you guys as you begin to step up to larger feature at your home mountain. To start off the day we spent some time in the Woodward Copper Barn and practiced several backflips on trampolines and into foam pits. Some of the biggest takeaways for me were to get a straight up pop and throw your head and shoulders straight back, spot your landing, and use your legs to control the speed of your rotation to bring your feet to the snow. At the end of the day it is a full commitment trick and you have to trust yourself and the prep you've done to be successful. No matter how many flips you've done into water or on tramps the first time on snow will be a little different, but I hope that this video helps you to stomp your first backflip! This is a really fun trick that can be done on a variety of terrain and features, including flat ground, and in this video you'll find some tips to help you dial it in. The biggest things to remember that will make this trick easier for you, is to jump/ollie as high as the entire length of the tail of your snowboard, get the board as vertical as possible, and focus on balancing on the tail while letting tension build up and flex out the snowboard. The more vertical the board is the more balance and less pressure you will have in your hand, which makes the trick easier. You will want to make sure you are comfortable hitting medium to large sized jumps, as well as spinning frontside 360's and doing both frontside and backside shifty's in the same jump. Once you're comfortable with these skills you will be able to focus completely on poking out your shifty's and nothing else while you are in the air. To do the shifty-shifty you'll want to poke a frontside shifty first, then your backside shifty, spot your landing, and then finish your rotation to ride away straight down the landing. Once you try this trick you will find that the spin comes around quite naturally, and you really can just focus on poking out the shifty-shifty.
