The forecast wasn't calling for snow but once we arrived it snowed all night. We woke up to one of the deepest powder days snowboarding we've ever had in Japan. I'm up on Blackcomb mountain today snowboarding with TJ and we're trying to find the steepest powder areas to hit. On a day like today where the snow is very deep it's important that we pick our lines wisely and keep our speed up on our snowboard. These are also the days which are the reason I first moved to Whistler for snowboarding. The deep powder and endless tree runs make you feel like you're in a snow globe. The best part of the day was actually the last run, where the snowboard had built back up making for incredible powder snowboarding! Checking out the Nitro Beast snowboard in the park and around the mountain at Keystone, Colorado. The Beast lives up to its name, and is an aggressive all-mountain/freestyle snowboard that will come through for even the hardest charging riders. Featuring a full positive camber profile and stiff flex, this snowboard will stand up to the largest features in the park as well as hold it's own as you explore the rest of the mountain. The biggest highlights I found on the Beast is the amount of stability that it offers, really allowing you to trust that the board will be there for you in sketchy situations, as well as pop. This is a lot of snowboard to handle with lots of energy and feedback, and I would recommend it for more advanced riders that want something solid to rip around on. Starting with a true twin shape, cam-rock profile, and mid flex, complemented by an asymmetrical sidecut and "midbite" additional conact points this board offers stability and grip on variable terrain while still being fun for jibbing and butters. We found technical big mountain lines in Corbet's Couloir, smooth powder, rock drops, and tree lines while exploring throughout the day. The Mercury features a directional twin shape, slight setback, camrock camber profile, and medium stiff flex; this offers solid performance in a wide variety of conditions with minimal compromise. The versatility of this snowboard stood out to me, as well as its very fast base, and significant amounts of stability. While this isn't a powder specific snowboard it will be manageable in powder if you set the stance back, and will also work well in the terrain park although I would say it leans towards the jump side of the spectrum when it comes to freestyle riding. Overall I was very impressed with the performance of the Mercury and would recommend it to more advanced riders interested in this style of snowboard.
