We get to ride some of the newest Burton snowboards for next season. It has also been just over a year since we lost one of the legends and pioneers of snowboarding Jake Burton Carpenter. Jake's lists of accomplishments in the snowboard industry are unmatched and snowboarding wouldn't be what it is today without him. I talk to a few of the snowboarders who had the pleasure of meeting Jake Burton and get some of their stories and what they think his legacy left on snowboarding. This is a new version of the original Orca created by Lib Tech and Travis Rice. My impression of this board are that it will be more freestyle focused with a more twin shape with less taper and more tail. We arrived at Whistler mountain at 5:30 AM to be the first snowboarders on the mountain. The first lap we snowboarded through the mountain bike trials to an advanced deep powder tree run. Then headed over to the peak of the mountain where I found the best powder snowboarding lap down from the peak. We spent the last lap riding through an incredible out of bounds tree run called Khybers Pass. I've owned many different pairs of Union snowboard bindings in the past including the Atlas, Strata, Force and Contact Pro models. What I think makes Union snowboarding bindings special is the combination of function and style. The factory really exceeded my expectation seeing the amount of planning and development goes into each model. The chairlift that usually runs in this area is closed, so we're forced to hike. We've brought up our avalanche gear to help keep us safe while snowboarding in these out of bounds areas and we're also testing our gear. The powder snowboard I'm riding today is the Jones Ultra Mind expander, which is my first day riding this board. In the end I think we found the best place to snowboard on the mountain. We're snowboarding in Hintertux, Austria and the mountain got over fifty centimeters of snow in forty eight hours. We arrived at the top of the mountain with our snowboards to find deep snow and dark clouds. We struggled to find our way but the some came out in spots and we managed to snowboard in some of the deepest powder ever. Overall the day was a success and I think we made the right decision to fight through the storm.
