The first snowboard trick is a frontside shifty on a small jump. The frontside shifty is a easy trick to learn on a small jump and you can practice it outside the park on the runs first. Another easy snowboard ticks is the backside board slide. This trick has the same movement as the front shifty and is easy because you don't have to fully commit. Learning to jump with ollies, on side hits and in the terrain park is the foundation for learning snowboard tricks. For ollies find the sweet spot in your snowboard to snap the tail to ollie higher and in more control. When learning to jump on side hits make sure you line up your snowboard straight with the takeoff and land straight as well. On small terrain park jumps bend you knees to stay balanced in the air and keep your body square to your snowboard to land straight. Finally when attempting snowboard tricks like 180's and 360's pop evenly off your snowboard edge to get height and stay balanced. On the mountain there are many different features your can improve your jumps and grabs on. Start with side hits and roller before progressing onto the jumps in the park. It's important to get a good pop off of the takeoff for grabs. This will help bring your snowboard up to your hands for the grab. Visualization is also important so you have a mental picture of what the grab will look like before you attempt it. You can even practice the grab in the the snow to build your muscle memory. It's a beautiful sunny day here in St Anton Austria and the park has some small features to work on some tricks. I''m snowboarding today with Yanick, Nirav and TJ. Yanick is working on his backside board slide on a box and getting ollies off the small jump. Nirav is going for a front side 180 on the first jump and an Indy grab on the last jump. TJ is going for a switch backside 180, a front blunt same way 270 and a blunt stall. I'm going or a back 180 off my heels on the box, a cab 180 off my toes on the jump and a back 180 with a stall on the jumps. We'll give you the tips that helped us to land these tricks. The mistake that I see beginner snowboarders make the most is turning their snowboard sideways in the air and landing on their heels and butt. The first tips to avoid this problem is to keep you back hand over your tail. This will keep you body square to your snowboard and keep it going straight over the jump. The second tip is to make sure you're looking over your shoulder. It's tempting to turn forward to see ahead of you, but this can cause your snowboard to turn sideways on the jump. The final tip is to point your snowboard straight and flat toward the lip of the jump, so your momentum carries you straight toward the landing. Doug has had a couple days of hitting smaller jumps and box features on his snowboard. We start the day with a couple warm up laps through the small terrain park getting warmed up and minds thinking about jumps. Next we went through the medium terrain park and took a look at all the jumps. Once we were warmed up on our snowboards and looked at the jumps, we were ready to hit the first jump! The first tip for hitting jumps on your snowboard is to get the speed right, so you can clear the knuckle. A great way to get the speed right is to watch other snowboarders hit the jump first. You can also build your confidence by hitting smaller snowboard jumps. Another key for clearing the knuckle is to get a small pop off the takeoff. This will get you more height in the air to make that landing. Practicing the pop or ollie on the snow and small jumps first so you can use it for landing bigger jumps. The final key in jump progression is to land with your snowboard level. When Doug was first learning to jump he was landing on his tail first, but with some practice he was able to level out the landing.
