An are of the the mountain called 7th Heaven opened today, which gave us access to a huge area of powder trees and alpine. Today is TJ's first day back in Whistler and he's cheching out the Blackcomb terrain park for the first time in a few weeks. The terrain park does have a few good jumps and jib features but is also very icy and chaotic for snowboarding. We managed to get a few snowboard tricks down in the park, but the best area for tricks was actually outside the park on side hits. We change up the day by hiking into the mountain to find some powder snow. After a forty five minute hike we arrive at a secret powder zone that has the best powder yet this year. Overnight we got 10cm's and it's continuing to snow throughout the day. This snow has opened up some of the areas on Whistler that we where unable to snowboard jump a few days ago. I'm riding today with Chris and Andreas who have their powder snowboads out. Andreas is actually riding a new snowboard that isn't even available yet, the GNU Fun Guy. After exploring some the the new powder zones that opened up we hit up some of the Whistler bike park trails that mostly covered enough to snowboard down. Gill is an intermediate snowboarder and still learning to snowboard in powder. I thought that as I teach her to snowboard in powder that I could share the tips with you as well. The most important skills for snowboarding in powder is to keep your weight over your tail, spray snow to control your speed and keep your speed up through flat areas. If you do get stuck in the powder the easiest way to get out is to roll over onto your knees. Another problem can be sliding out on your heel edge. To fix this try and spray snow an equal amount on your snowboards toe edge as you do on your heels. Have fun snowboarding in powder and leave and question you have in the comments!
