From the moment her career took off, Rayssa Leal continues to crush records and complete huge milestones. In 2019, she made history as the youngest competitor to win an SLS tour stop at age 11 and took second place at the SLS World Championship in Brazil that year. Today, she commands an Instagram following of 6.3 million and pushes the limits of technical street skateboarding. At the Tokyo Olympics, the young skateboard prodigy took home the silver medal in Women’s Street Skateboarding for Brazil. Leal earned her first X Games gold medal in early 2022 and is currently a top contender to win the SLS Super Crown World Championship in Brazil this fall. Few racing sports are as raw as downhill longboarding. Charging down a steep asphalt road on a piece of wood (sometimes carbon fiber) and two pairs of small wheels, usually without protective leather clothing, is as hardcore as it gets. Imagine standing on top of a mountain pass in the far South of Slovenia. You are 1000 meters above sea level and in the middle of brown bear country. A thin white line at the bottom of your feet is marking the start line, three riders, with full-face helmets covering their faces, standing next to you. Only two out of four will progress to the next round, but that does not matter now. You try to calm you thoughts and focus on what you are getting into. Suddenly you hear a voice you’ve been eagerly expecting for the last minute or so: “Riders ready?! Get set… Go!!!” By the time the starter is finished shouting, you are already pushing your longboard as fast you possibly can before ducking down for best aerodynamic performance. You and the crew are now speeding into “Bear’s Guts” —  a 4-kilometre long stretch of perfect asphalt with 18 hairpin turns, that gets up to 14% steep and enables speeds exceeding 80 kilometres per hour — or in other words: five minutes of adrenalin drenched all killer no filler action.
