In this video you'll find 5 snowboards that offer better powder performance than your typical freestyle snowboard, but are still a lot of fun for runs through the park. The two most common features in these boards that help with float are a directional shape (longer nose than tail outside the contact points), as well a slight taper (skinnier tail than nose). Some of these boards are more directional than others, but I think all of them make a good compromise when it comes to offering float while still being fun on natural features and in the park. You are always going to be making a compromise when trying to find one snowboard to meet both of these requirements, but I think these 5 will start you down the right path if that is what you are looking for. I found the Sickstick to be a very versatile snowboard that was actually really fun in the park thanks to its twinnish style shape. It does have some directional aspects to it like its tapered tail and longer nose (outside the contact points) that both help to offer more float and maneuverability in deep or heavy snow. Overall I would say the Sickstick is a great choice as a freestyle friendly freeride stick. From park to pow I think you're going to have a good time on the Sickstick. This video was filmed on May 5, 2017 at Arapahoe basin, and still had pretty solid conditions for trying out these boards. These are both high profile snowboards that everyone was talking about and comparing during the 2016/2017 season, so when the opportunity arose I thought it would be a good idea to compare them and clear things up. The DOA is very freestyle friendly but rides more like an all-mountain snowboard while the Huck Knife is more of a pure freestyle stick. In the end they are both a lot of fun with the DOA being more aggressive and poppy and the Huck Knife being more playful, pressable and jib friendly. Sliding turns are great for snowboarding on the runs, through narrow paths and in the terrain park. The key for sliding turns is to use the tail of your snowboard like a fishes tail. Sweeping your snowboard back and forth, using your edges to control your speed. Anticipate each turn with your front shoulder, which will allow you to turn quickly and prevent you from over steering your snowboard. Use your knees as you turn to absorb bumps and keep your snowboards edge in constant contact with the snow. The quick sliding turns are perfect in the terrain park because it allows you to keep a narrow approach up to a box or jump. The snow was well groomed and pretty firm throughout the day, providing great conditions for charging around on groomers and in the park. The camber in the profile and carbon stringers gave this snowboard some solid pop even though it has a softer flex. This snowboard performs best on rails in my opinion, although it is still a lot of fun on mellow jumps and cruising around the slopes. The highlight on the Salomon Villain for me was how well I was able to press on snow, and on rails.
