In this video I show you how to install a set of coilovers in to an NB MX5. The process is almost identical for NA, and a lot of the same principles apply to just about every car. The video also covers the features and benefits of MCA Suspension coilovers, and why I chose them for Project MX5.

As someone who had never done anything like this before, the whole process took me around 4-5 hours on my own, and would definately be faster the next time having learned a few lessons in the process which are all covered in the video. I'd say allowing an hour per corner is reasonable. Faster still if you have a helper.

The only difficult part was getting the top nuts on the rear struts whilst holding them in place. I managed on one side but ended up getting helper on the other side to speed things up a bit and reduce the risk of dropping my shiny new MCA X-R coilovers.

Equipment & Tools Required:

Jack (or Hoist)
4 x Jack Stands (or Hoist)
A flat and even surface to work on
Wheel nut adaptor to suit your wheel nuts
Gloves (Optional but your hands will get VERY dirty without them!)
Torque Wrench (up to 95NM)
Breaker Bar (or 17mm wheel brace)
Deep Socket Set - (12mm - 20mm)
Ratchet
Extension Bar to suit Ratched/Sockets
17mm Spanner
Hex keys or Hex Head set for Ratchet
Penetrating lubricant to assist with bolt removal (I used WD-40)
Spring Compressors (Optional but recommended if you're doing this on your own)

Project MX5 - August Update - Wheels, Tyres, Coilovers, Wrap and more!

As you can see, the car is in a bit of a state at the moment, with a few "half done" mods that need to be finished off. I also have coilovers and Wrap ready to happen! My aim is to have it back on the road properly and off to some motorkhana in the very near future.

As I mentioned in the video, I am a total n00b with most of the stuff I'm going to be doing over the next little while, so any comments or suggestions are VERY welcome!

No fancy tricks or complex wiring here, but there are a few thigns you need to do to get plugs to reach and sockets to fit.

If you missed the Part 2 showing how to correctly wire up the High and Low Beam circuit so that it functions exactly like a real NB2, WITH working High Beam Indicator Lamp on the dash, make sure you check out PART 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxJbmIKp2KM

Headlight Modification - Part 4 - Sealing Headlights Back Together

It is EXTREMELY important to allow the paint time to cure before reassembling your lights. While the paint is curing, gasses are emitted, and if trapped inside sealed lights will leave a cloudy residue on the inside of the lenses which is very difficult to clean off. I always leave lights for a week before I put them back together to allow the paint time to cure.

From here we will monitor the oil leaks for a while to determine jsut how bad they are, then make a decision on whether we spend money on repairing this engine, or go straight for an engine swap.
