King of the Hammers might just be the most gnarly race in America. High speed off-road racing paired with competition rock crawling and survival tactics - all done wheel-to-wheel. Our good homie Justin Pawlak said he'd let one of us Hoonigans navigate in this year's race, in one of his prepared Jeep Gladiators... so of course we're taking him up on that. ​@RamTrucks gave me a new and unreleased version of their 2022 TRX: the Sandblast Edition! It’s like a supercar built for dirt, so let’s just call it a supertruck. Ridiculously comfortable luxury interior stacked with a 702 horsepower 6.2L supercharged Hemi engine, what more could you ask for? Maybe some suspension travel and frosty air conditioning? It has both of those things and plenty more. Naturally I wanted to test the limits of this new unreleased TRX so I decided to take it to Johnson Valley where they hold the annual King of the Hammers race to put it through the paces. And by paces I mean whoops, donuts, jumps, dune slides and a little Gymkhana too. FIRST START! How do we make our Halo Warthog FAST and INDESTRUCTABLE all at once? First we got a 1,000+ horsepower capable fully built Ford Windsor 438ci V8 engine, added Garrett Motion twin turbos (ALL THE BOOST) to it and strapped a bullet proof Gearstar Supermatic80 Transmission with a massive pro billet torque converter along with an Atlas 2-speed transfer case. All the necessary things to make all the power and to make it strong enough to handle our gaggle of scumbags. We teamed up with Microsoft and Halo to build a real deal Warthog (M12-FAV) from the all-new Halo Infinite but of course we added our own spice to it… We took a Ford V8 like the one in the Hoonicorn, added two turbos to it and made a little over 1,000hp! But this isn’t a car show pony, it actually RIPS. With fully functional off-road racing suspension, active 4-wheel steering our Halo Warthog is a fully capable off-road race truck that can jump, crawl and do everything you expect from an Ultra4 racing vehicle that you’d find at King of the Hammers. We drive 34 hours across the Country each year to cover one event at King of the Hammers. The King of the Hammers Shootout 2021 took place on the same course as last year with a lot of different buggies hitting the course with reckless abandon. There is even a Can Am UTV buggy with Paul Wolfe entered this year. KOH Shootout 2021 was one for the books. This is a tough course during the day and it only gets more difficult at night. On Rock Rods Episode 95 we are taking you back out to the King of the Hammers Shootout 2020. We wish it was called the KOH Backdoor Shootout 2020 but this year we are on a new trail called Idle issues that is just to the right of Chocolate Thunder. This is a long technical course and I doubt any of these guys got any prerunning time on it so it's anyone's game in this Rock Bouncer vs Rock Crawler competition. Each Rock Racing driver gets one run and the fastest time wins. One thing is for certain there will be crashes and broken parts. King of the Hammers Shootout 2020 brought in a new obstacle and a new champion. We can't wait to see what the Southern Rock Racing Series guys have in store for rock bouncer racing next year. The 2019 Holley EFI Shootout at King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, California, sure was a good time! They picked a way better hill this year and it lead to a ton of carnage and rollovers. It might not have been Backdoor but it was equally as difficult. Rock bouncers stole the show again as only a couple Ultra4 rigs even attempted the climb.
