An "overset" of the wrists is a common swing flaw; it can arise due to misguided training or may be attributed to a few of the well-intentioned (but misleading) golf adages related to the wrists. Unfortunately, this relatively subtle action can lead to a number of compensations in the downswing, such as casting and/or "early-extension".

Thankfully, to heighten our awareness for this pattern, all we need is a simple closet hanger; this should allow us to avoid "maxing out" the amount of radial deviation that occurs in the backswing, while still mindfully increasing the extension in the trail wrist.

Overall, this should help create a backswing that is more conducive to the efficient (and powerful) "pelvis-torso-club" transition sequence and subsequent "tour" release. Players who improve upon this motion should notice more tension/load in the core and hips during both the backswing & downswing, along with improved timing and consistency.

One of the most common questions I hear from my students is, "How do I use my hips in the golf swing?" While this is somewhat of a broad topic, it can be a trouble spot for many players given the variety of lower-body swing faults that exist; golfers may struggle with sway/slide patterns, early extension, a lack of rotation at impact, and so forth.

Thankfully, I have found this walkthrough useful for players looking to better understand how we interact with the ground AND how to train the proper lower-body patterns. To do this, we will use (1) key checkpoint in transition and a couple different "feels" related to the timing/rhythm of our pressure shift.

Overall, we want to increase the awareness for how we load the lower-body, so that we can use rotation to improve sequencing, timing, and our overall swing consistency.

As the last segment of our 3-part Matt Wolff swing analysis, I thought it would be fun to do a quick comparison to Jim Furyk. Despite the fact these (2) players have been discussed in the same breath lately, I believe their swings are actually quite different.

While they both share sharply vertical backswings and a strong shallowing of the club in transition, the ways in which they create these patterns are contrasting. Wolff generates more torso/pelvis rotation and sequences his downswing in a traditional "1-2-3" manner; this allows his arms to remain relatively passive before fully releasing at impact. As for Furyk, he rotates his torso/pelvis minimally in the backswing and relies on a vertical drop of the arms in transition to shallow the club. From there, he rotates hard through impact and his arms do not fully release until well after the ball is struck.

Ultimately, I think this is an interesting exercise as it shows how (2) world-class players can share a few common positions, yet have radically different "engines" behind them. Hopefully, it can provide a few ideas for examining the subtleties in your own swing.

Matt Wolff is a great representative for the next generation of talent on the PGA Tour; he was able to claim his first victory in just three starts and in the process, became the youngest winner since Jordan Spieth in 2013. Wolff also stands alongside Tiger Woods and Ben Crenshaw as the only (3) players to have won the NCAA individual title and a PGA Tour event in the same year.

As a follow-up to our driver analysis video, we will now take a look Matt's iron play; he is currently ranked 10th in proximity from 150-175 yards and is 18th overall for strokes gained on approaches.

Wolff is an adept iron player for a host of reasons, such as his control of "low-point" and ability to maintain posture while delivering a very powerful and compressive strike. If you struggle with your iron game, there are definitely a few moves to emulate in this breakdown.

In light of Matt's recent 2nd place finish at this year's US Open, we will take an in-depth look at the moves that make him such an incredible driver of the golf ball; Wolff is accurate AND powerful with regular ball-speeds reaching over 180+ MPH.

Overall, Wolff is able to accomplish all of this through some great release mechanics and a very athletic pivot. When combined, these result in the famous "flat-spot" that is often found in the best ball-strikers on tour.

Converting Linear To Angular Speed | Tour Release Question

I recently received a great question from one of our members regarding the release. Specifically, I was asked when/how does the linear speed of the grip translate into angular club-head velocity. While this may seem like a rather complex concept, the answer is (thankfully) a bit more simple.

If we do a decent job of sequencing our pivot and release mechanics, we should get a sense that the proper blend of these moves results in a pulling sensation on the grip, especially at impact; this "pull" is the mechanism responsible for kicking the club outwards during the release and it is a very dynamic aspect of the swing.

Ultimately, pulling on the handle correctly is what helps translate the linear speed of the grip into maximum club-head velocity. Players who are efficient at this pattern will benefit from a longer flat-spot and in turn, improved consistency. On the other hand, golfers who rely on a last second "throw" of the club will struggle with poor contact and a loss of distance.

Overall, learning how to efficiently sequence the big and small muscles is a great way to get a sense for this pattern.

Golfers struggling with a concept known as "low point" will often face a variety of consistency issues ranging from poor contact to erratic start-lines. Students working on their impact orientations (and in turn this concept) may also have added difficulties when increasing speed & power.

For these situations, a simple pool-noodle or vertical alignment stick can increase spatial awareness and provide additional feedback regarding any sway/lunge patterns that may be present; this creates an environment where players can gradually increase the length of their backswing and still maintain efficient impact orientations.

Overall, improving low point should be one of the first considerations in the search to consistently find more fairways and greens.

"Early Extension" can be one of the most stubborn patterns to break. While it is often attributed to movement limitations or a poor deep squat pattern, I believe there is a large percentage of players who fall into this category due to inefficient swing mechanics.

Thankfully, if we pay attention to when this pattern occurs in the downswing, we can get a good idea of the "cause and effect". Typically, players who early extend late into the downswing are struggling to manage the path and/or face. If the club is overly steep or open coming into impact, going into extension is a great (but inefficient) way to quickly shallow the club AND close the face. On the other hand, players who early extend immediately into the start of the downswing are often struggling to utilize the proper "power sources" and sequencing. In these cases, doing a bit of core and rotational based training in the gym can provide a huge boost.

Overall though, thinking about early extension as an effect (rather than a cause) is often the best way to remedy this tricky and highly debated swing flaw.

If you have played the game long enough, you will undoubtedly come across a point in time where you have "lost" your swing; this is true for even the best professionals in the world. To make matters worse, there can be both mental and physical components to this situation. For example, it often occurs when making a significant swing change; this can be due to the time required to break old habits or by revealing other inefficiencies further down the road. Remember, one compensation in golf is often due to another.

On a more positive note, this troubleshooting process is a great starting point for players who are struggling to find their game again. Ultimately, if we can use a standardized method, while paying attention to both the larger and smaller muscles, we should be able to remove some of the emotion from this frustrating situation and come up with a game plan to get back on track.

Lag is one of the most commonly misunderstood concepts in golf; players of all skill levels are often confused as to how it is generated and where to spot it when analyzing their own swings. On top of all this, there is also a point of diminishing returns for this concept. Students who over-exaggerate this pattern will often benefit from working in the opposite direction; movements such as "the unhinge" can be a huge help in these cases.

Overall, if you are struggling with a flip-release, poor contact/low-point control, or are simply looking to better understand the common golf adage that is "lag", this is a useful and straightforward starting point.

Players that understand the differences between a stock swing and the finesse wedge are usually better equipped to troubleshoot their game from tee-to-green.

For golfers that do not fall into this category, I will often suggest this fun learning exercise. To start, I will ask students to demonstrate their "first guess" of how the release should look for the finesse wedge, while seated. To their surprise, the correct (and 3D-verified) movements can be drastically different from their rehearsal.

Ultimately, this exercise is a great starting point for introducing several release-related concepts such as supination, the unhinge pattern, and bracing versus coasting. In the end, working through these items should provide several "lightbulb" moments and hopefully, the opportunity to clean up a few technical inefficiencies.

This is a great way to combine several tour inspired release drills into one playable "feel".

As a starting point, improving the patterns related to the trail arm will often mitigate issues with contact and inconsistency. Movements such as the motorcycle, wipe, and unhinge are variations that can be quickly incorporated into some of the 9-to-3/10-to-2 release drills.

With these fundamentals, players can then progress to the sidearm throw pattern, which helps train both rotation and side bend through impact; this is a useful concept for players looking to maintain their posture and avoid "early-extension".

Ultimately, these concepts can provide a sense for how both the big and small muscles coordinate during the swing. When trained together, they should create a consolidated feel that can easily transfer from the range to the course.
