Koenigsegg has built a new car that looks like its oldest one. Welcome to the CC850: a 1,385hp hypercar with a very complicated manual/automatic gearbox, all clothed in the timeless design of Koenigsegg’s first ever production car. That’s the CC8S, providing ample proof of its ageless design concept because it looks just as fresh today as it did back in 2002. This new car celebrates 20 years since it first took flight, as well as the boss' 50th birthday. The CC850 achieves a 1:1 power to weight ratio with 1385hp (on E85) and a 1385 kg kerb weight. This is Peugeot’s finished 9X8 endurance racing Hypercar, and yes, there’s still no rear wing. Peugeot reckons it can generate enough ground effect with clever under-body aero alone. Pretty impressive considering the 9X8 is a 671bhp endurance racer that weighs just over a tonne… The 9X8 conforms to the ACO and FIA’s Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) class and is four-wheel drive, with a 2.6-litre twin-turbo V6 powering the rear wheels and a bespoke, high performance electric motor on the fronts. Europe’s supercars are mainly Italian, German, and British… but another nation is in on the action. From the land that brought you Skoda, meet Czechia’s fastest export: the Praga Bohema. It’s not mucking about, is it? The all-carbon fibre two-seater is not a road-going version of Praga’s R1R racing car. Oh no. The R1R makes do a with a willing Renault engine good for 365bhp. The Bohema doesn’t share components with the racer. And courtesy of a Nissan GT-R engine, it’s got 700bhp. The engineers say they’re simply not interested in an irrelevant big top speed number, when all the fun is had getting the Bohema through the corners as quickly as physics allows. Over 900kg of downforce ought to help there. That insectile body is fully carbon fibre and obsessed with channelling air. There’s no active aero though: an airbrake or adjustable flaps would need a heavy hydraulic system, which offends the sub-1000kg Praga’s weight-shedding ethos. There is, however, full air-con and a state of the art touchscreen inside. Sort of. Each winter the world’s most famous mountain pass – the Stelvio – is closed. Someone has to be the one to open it for summer then, and this year that task was handed to Top Gear. Naturally, we brought along the perfect car for the job – Lamborghini’s reborn Countach LPI 800-4. A carbon-tubbed, loud-piped 4WD extrovert capable of 0-62mph in 2.8secs, 124mph in 8.6secs and 221mph flat out. Those numbers seem familiar, you say? That's because, underneath the retro styling, the Countach is almost identical to the Sian, the first production Lamborghini to receive electrification with an equally bonkers price tag. Nope, the spelling isn’t wrong, Ariel is merely using the word differently, a contraction of ‘High Performance Carbon Reduction’. So 'Hipercar'. Carbon emissions rather than carbon fibre. There’s a lot of the latter about, although underneath the chassis is aluminium and most of the body sections are weighty 3D-printed test panels. It’s 1,759kg as it sits here, but Ariel is confident of dropping that below 1,500kg with full carbon panels and carbon wheels. The jet turbine is a range extender – it exists to charge the 56kWh battery, not drive the wheels. Available as either 2WD or 4WD, with or without the jet turbine, full house versions are likely to be knocking on the door of seven figures. That’s a complete sea change for Ariel, for a car without classic hypercar elegance. But this is new tech, new age, new customer base. It’s something totally different, something wild and outrageous, the essence of Ariel in electric form. This is the wingless Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut - according to Christian von Koenigsegg: “The name Absolut comes from the fact that this is the absolute fastest Koenigsegg we will ever make.” Yikes. The engine is a flat plane crank 5.1-litre twin-turbo V8 that for the most part feels naturally aspirated and always very angry indeed. It produces 1,578bhp and 1,106lb ft of torque, can rev from idle to 8,500rpm in 0.2 seconds, 0–62mph takes around 2.5 seconds and top speed in this Absolut version is theoretically the scary side of 310mph. We say theoretically, because no one’s found the space, or the brass balls, to find out yet... Only 125 will ever be built costing around £2.3m each, though deep pockets won’t help here – they’re all completely sold out. The addition of the DCT class at GTR World Cup 2021 caught the attention of many racers, resulting in many new builds debuting at the event. This change appears to have been well received as it provided an event for many racers hindered by the clutches of a frigid winter. While Jason Heffner doesn’t fall into that category from the warmth of Florida, he had other obstacles to overcome in order to compete in this new class. One being that he hadn’t purchased the car yet, and when he made the decision to pull the trigger on one, the event was only a month away. When we he told us that we were almost certain the Heffner Twin Turbo decals were simply for show. It only took one pass to see that he wasn’t kidding, and he and his team did in fact pull it off!
