This 1989 Volkswagen can go 200mph?! In the middle of 1320Video’s tour of Germany, we found ourselves at the reason we crossed the pond - The RACE1000 1/2 Mile at Airport Magdeburg Cochstedt, aka Germany’s premier 1/2 mile event! We heard this is where European cars come to raise the bar and we were not at all let down! Starting with this 1300hp Volkswagen GTI, powered by a massive Turbo fused to a built 24v VR6 from a VW R32 (they even swapped 4motion drivetrain into it!). Denny Wimmer and his CRAZY mkii GTI really opened our eyes to the European car scene, giving us a taste of what else the RACE1000 had to offer. By now, the whole world knows that Aussies don’t mess around when it comes to CRAZY and over the top, but this was pretty wild even for them! We caught Ben and his BADASS Boost Factory he bolted in between the wheels of a 1976 Ford Cortina! Stoked and ready to ROCK, Ben was preparing for his first Skid ever at Summernats while also hoping to break his current personal best skid of 14 seconds! Built from the motivation of being told he’d never get it to work, it was a particularly proud time as he showed off he CRAZY build! All show and PLENTY of go, this 1976 Ford Cortina laid down a nasty skid until a mechanical issue cut the run short. AUTOMOTIVE HOW TOS | GUIDES | HOW STUFF WORKS | PROJECT CAR BUILDS and MORE: www.boostedautos.net/youtube We all know that turbos make cars go faster, but how exactly is this achieved? An engine can be thought of like a pump. On the intake stroke the engine draws air in. This air is mixed with fuel and compressed as the piston rises, a spark ignites the mixture and forces the piston down. As the piston rises back up, the waste products from the combustion stroke are forced out of the exhaust at high temperature and the next cycle begins. A turbo converts this waste thermal energy into kinetic energy, which can then be used to pressurise the air entering the engine. Pressurised air contains more oxygen, and more oxygen means a more powerful combustion is possible, thus increasing the power output of the engine. In this quick video I run you through the fundamental components of a turbocharger and how they combine to generate boost pressure inside your engine. Including Compressor and Compressor Housing, Turbine and Turbine Housing, Internal and External Wastegates. I also go through the differences between different types of turbochargers,and how the correct turbo is chosen when designing a car or turbo kit.
