I can’t have a 637hp all-electric Audi RS e-tron GT for a daily driver and NOT find out if it can slide, right?? Welcome to a world first. This is the new GranTurismo Folgore. When it arrives next year, it’ll be Maserati’s first pure EV. And it’s quite something: a tri-motor layout powered by a 92kwh battery and developing 750bhp. There will be no hybrid option, but as well as this all-electric model the marque will offer the GranTurismo with the MC20 supercar’s twin-turbo V6 Nettuno motor with either 483bhp (in the entry level Modena version) or 542bhp (for the Trofeo). But electric is the clever one, able to divvy power up between the motors and do complex torque vectoring stuff through corners. Range is quoted at 280 miles on the WLTP cycle. Petrols are likely to be around the £150k mark, this Folgore closer to £200,000. The name, by the way. It roughly translates as lightning or thunderbolt, and will be applied to all electric Maseratis in future. Folgore versions of the MC20 supercar and Grecale SUV will follow soon after. In January 2022 Audi broke new ground. Literally. Not only did the German manufacturer enter the iconic Dakar Rally for the first time, it did it in a pioneering way using a unique and unproven concept. All cars finished. But it didn’t go perfectly – a Dakar hardly ever does. There were navigation issues to contend with, plus problems with the dampers. But the team came together to overcome struggles. Audi Sport, the drivers and a crew of brainy people are currently preparing for the next edition of the famous desert rally in early 2023. Having pushed boundaries and mastered multiple motorsport disciplines, including endurance racing, rallying, DTM, IMSA and Formula E, Audi is thirsty for Dakar success. With the world’s toughest rally kicking off once again in January 2023, you can see in the video above how the team and drivers are preparing and what they learned last year. Electrification is clearly the future for small city runarounds. However, some manufacturers are looking to the past for design cues - in a good way... The Honda e has dinky dimensions and doe eyes, reminiscent of its 80s ancestor, the Honda City. Underneath its retro exterior, it has a 35.5kWh battery and an electric motor that produces 152bhp. The Fiat 500 Electric looks like... well, a Fiat 500 - a tried and tested shape which has barely changed since the 50s. It doesn't have as much power as its Japanese rival (116bhp) but it does come in almost 200kgs lighter. These arent The Stig's standard track weapons of choice, but they should make for an interesting race. Meet the re-newed Audi RS Q e-tron : lighter, more aerodynamic, and more improved than last year. Can it win the Dakar? No longer rookies thanks to a year’s worth of Dakar experience and an Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge win under their belt, Audi Sport is more competitive and ready for this year’s Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. As soon as Audi got back from last year’s race (and quite a few showers later), the team started scratching their heads to make this year’s car (a ridiculously complex off-road buggy with an alternative drive concept that blends a Formula E’s electric drivetrain with a high-voltage battery and a highly efficient 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from DTM to keep the battery topped-up) even faster. ‘Evolution not revolution’ was the mantra for the new car as the furiously complex drivetrain had no faults during its debut last year, proving that the car can finish the Dakar and be competitive. Even so, the whole car has been refined, made lighter and more aerodynamic. As you can see, the body is completely new and features significantly enhanced aerodynamics. It helps lower the prototype’s weight and center of gravity. To improve efficiency, there are a flurry of new operating strategies that benefit this complex car. Meanwhile, a load of ergonomic changes in the interior allow the dream team of drivers (Mattias Ekström, Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz) and their co-drivers to navigate, change wheels and generally make the whole racing thing easier. The Audi Sport team is currently packing its bags and heading to the start line in a few weeks. Remember, the Dakar is a place where lap times are measured in weeks not minutes; an annual 6,000-mile off-road race and the ultimate test of how much a car and the human body can take.
