Most of the mountain is closed because of avalanche risk, but we managed to find the best powder in the some unexplored trees. I'm snowboarding today with TJ who's testing out the K2 Party Platter in the powder. Overall this was incredible day of snowboarding where we explored new tree runs we hit for the first time this season. Silverton, ColoRADo (pt II) The mitigated avalanches on Highway 110 (the road to the chairlift) were enormous and the snow completely covered the road over ten feet in some spots. Vehicles were unable to get through there for days and guests came and left. The mad scientist that runs Silverton Mountain decided to transport us powder hungry shredders by chopper from the town pretty much. First time ever this has happened before here so we were all feeling pretty excited and knew it was a special day. After the mountain being closed for five days straight while it was dumping snow you can bet it did not disappoint. Really glad I extended my trip three days because... Gill is an intermediate snowboarder and still learning to snowboard in powder. I thought that as I teach her to snowboard in powder that I could share the tips with you as well. The most important skills for snowboarding in powder is to keep your weight over your tail, spray snow to control your speed and keep your speed up through flat areas. If you do get stuck in the powder the easiest way to get out is to roll over onto your knees. Another problem can be sliding out on your heel edge. To fix this try and spray snow an equal amount on your snowboards toe edge as you do on your heels. Have fun snowboarding in powder and leave and question you have in the comments! The first key for big powder slashes is to snowboard into an open area of powder with some speed. The second tip is to quickly twist your snowboard sideways to get the snow spraying into the air. Once your get the spray going untwist and point your snowboard straight again. Finally make sure you keep on your back foot while doing powder slashes. This is key for keeping the nose of your snowboard up in the air and will prevent you from tomahawking forward into the snow. Be safe out there snowboarding and have fun working on the powder slash!
