We arrived at Whistler mountain at 5:30 AM to be the first snowboarders on the mountain. The first lap we snowboarded through the mountain bike trials to an advanced deep powder tree run. Then headed over to the peak of the mountain where I found the best powder snowboarding lap down from the peak. We spent the last lap riding through an incredible out of bounds tree run called Khybers Pass. I'm snowboarding with my friends Andreas and Brent who are leading the way through some technical trees and hard to find areas. Today is the first day some of the high alpine section of the mountain are opening including one of my favorite spots called Spanky's ladder. This area on a powder day is incredible for doing some steep and high speed powder turn on you snowboard. Silverton, ColoRADo (pt II) The mitigated avalanches on Highway 110 (the road to the chairlift) were enormous and the snow completely covered the road over ten feet in some spots. Vehicles were unable to get through there for days and guests came and left. The mad scientist that runs Silverton Mountain decided to transport us powder hungry shredders by chopper from the town pretty much. First time ever this has happened before here so we were all feeling pretty excited and knew it was a special day. After the mountain being closed for five days straight while it was dumping snow you can bet it did not disappoint. Really glad I extended my trip three days because... The first tip is to crank your highbacks forward. Having your highbacks forward will make it easier to keep your heel edge in the snow. The second tip is to ride with your body in a seated position. This helps to keep your weight balanced over your snowboard, so your edge won's slide out. The third tip is to keep your back hand over the tail of your snowboard. This will help you to balance and keep your board pointed straight. If your switch riding is good, try riding switch on your toe edge. Its much easier to traverse on your toe edge. While on your toe edge bend your knees forward to keep your edge in the snow. Your knees also absorb the pumps on the traverse. Give these tips a try and hopefully they're help you to traverse to the area you need to go. The first key for big powder slashes is to snowboard into an open area of powder with some speed. The second tip is to quickly twist your snowboard sideways to get the snow spraying into the air. Once your get the spray going untwist and point your snowboard straight again. Finally make sure you keep on your back foot while doing powder slashes. This is key for keeping the nose of your snowboard up in the air and will prevent you from tomahawking forward into the snow. Be safe out there snowboarding and have fun working on the powder slash!
