I am excited to announce that I have teamed up with Audi on an electrifying new partnership, which will include expanding the Gymkhana franchise to include a new installment starring a very top secret Audi e-tron. The film, dubbed Electrikhana, is scheduled to release in 2022. This union will also see me exploring Audi’s cutting-edge racing and EV technologies, plus serve as a catalyst to push the limits of what’s possible in an electric vehicle. This partnership is literally a dream decades in the making. Audi’s efforts in the WRC, specifically with their Group B cars, along with their wins at Pikes Peak in the 1980’s is what led me down the path to become a rally driver. Their Quattro system pioneered the AWD car revolution and forever changed the sport of rally, and now I’m getting a chance to be a part of their next leap in motorsports with electric performance. It’s quite an honor, and humbling, to now consider myself a part of a team that I have highly respected for so long. And I can’t wait to share more details on the vehicle Audi is building for Electrikhana, it’s going to be insane. To lead off the new relationship, I recently traveled to Audi’s home in Ingolstadt, Germany to emerge in all things Four Rings. This trip is documented in a three-part series, the first episode of explores the influence, heritage, and the future of the automobile manufacturer in racing. I got to sample an arsenal from Audi’s current line up including the new ridiculous fast, Audi RS e-tron GT as well as the Audi e-tron Vision GT concept car. But while the partnership looks to the future of performance, I wasn’t going to miss out on an opportunity to drive some iconic machines from the past, including Hans Stuck’s championship winning DTM Audi V8 and Walter Röhrl’s legendary Group B Audi Quattro S1 E2. In addition, I got an intimate look at Audi’s all new Dakar-racecar, the RS Q e-tron racer that will be reimagining the way people view electrification in long distance, endurance racing. All of which can be seen in the coming episodes. And to answer the question on everyone’s minds: why the switch to electrified vehicles? For me, it’s simple really: It’s new. It’s high level performance. It’s the future. After debuting my Audi Sport Quattro replica “Turbo Monster” last year in Hoonigan’s RING LEADERS (https://youtu.be/Gufm5H4hZi0) and at SEMA in Toyo Tires booth, we had a long year of fine tuning some details in the car: from a custom exhaust from Borla for the 730+ horsepower inline-5 turbo engine, to fine tuning hand-brake location, and even registering the car complete with the custom CARCAIN(E) license plate. NOW we‘re finally able to give the Sport Quattro its first proper test at Willow Springs Raceway in Southern California. Full throttle pulls, i5 turbo exhaust sound music-to-ear science (thanks again Borla), handbrake slides, figure 8's, donuts, tire smoke (and a wheel lockup issue); the stress gets put on. After all, the goal here is to have a reliable (and hoon-capable; because when’s the last time I didn’t Hoon Test anything I drive regularly??) daily driver. Enjoy!! In January 2022 Audi broke new ground. Literally. Not only did the German manufacturer enter the iconic Dakar Rally for the first time, it did it in a pioneering way using a unique and unproven concept. All cars finished. But it didn’t go perfectly – a Dakar hardly ever does. There were navigation issues to contend with, plus problems with the dampers. But the team came together to overcome struggles. Audi Sport, the drivers and a crew of brainy people are currently preparing for the next edition of the famous desert rally in early 2023. Having pushed boundaries and mastered multiple motorsport disciplines, including endurance racing, rallying, DTM, IMSA and Formula E, Audi is thirsty for Dakar success. Meet the re-newed Audi RS Q e-tron : lighter, more aerodynamic, and more improved than last year. Can it win the Dakar? No longer rookies thanks to a year’s worth of Dakar experience and an Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge win under their belt, Audi Sport is more competitive and ready for this year’s Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. As soon as Audi got back from last year’s race (and quite a few showers later), the team started scratching their heads to make this year’s car (a ridiculously complex off-road buggy with an alternative drive concept that blends a Formula E’s electric drivetrain with a high-voltage battery and a highly efficient 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from DTM to keep the battery topped-up) even faster. ‘Evolution not revolution’ was the mantra for the new car as the furiously complex drivetrain had no faults during its debut last year, proving that the car can finish the Dakar and be competitive. Even so, the whole car has been refined, made lighter and more aerodynamic. As you can see, the body is completely new and features significantly enhanced aerodynamics. It helps lower the prototype’s weight and center of gravity. To improve efficiency, there are a flurry of new operating strategies that benefit this complex car. Meanwhile, a load of ergonomic changes in the interior allow the dream team of drivers (Mattias Ekström, Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz) and their co-drivers to navigate, change wheels and generally make the whole racing thing easier. The Audi Sport team is currently packing its bags and heading to the start line in a few weeks. Remember, the Dakar is a place where lap times are measured in weeks not minutes; an annual 6,000-mile off-road race and the ultimate test of how much a car and the human body can take.
